Sensory processing in autism: a parent's guide
Why sensory differences drive so much autistic behaviour, how to identify your child's sensory profile, and practical changes that make daily life easier.
A great deal of behaviour that looks inexplicable becomes obvious once you understand sensory processing. The child who cannot sit still in assembly, refuses all foods with sauce, screams at the hand dryer, or crashes into furniture all day is not being difficult. They are managing a nervous system that receives the world at a different volume.
Eight senses, not five
Most people know five. Three more matter enormously here.
Proprioception — the sense of where your body is in space, from receptors in muscles and joints. Poor proprioception looks like clumsiness, pressing too hard when writing, hugging too tightly, crashing into things, and seeking deep pressure.
Vestibular — balance and movement, from the inner ear. Under-responsive children spin, swing and rock endlessly without dizziness. Over-responsive children are frightened by playground equipment, escalators, having their feet leave the ground, or having their head tipped back.
Interoception — internal body signals: hunger, thirst, temperature, pain, needing the toilet, and the physical components of emotion. This one is underappreciated and explains an enormous amount:
- Not noticing hunger until suddenly desperate
- Toileting accidents well past the usual age
- Not noticing injuries, or reacting hugely to small ones
- Not recognising their own anger or anxiety until it overflows
- Not feeling too hot or too cold
Interoceptive difficulty is a major reason autistic children struggle to answer “how are you feeling?” — the information genuinely is not reaching them clearly.
Over- and under-responsive
Two broad patterns, usually mixed within the same child:
Hyper-responsive (over-registering). Input arrives too loud. Covering ears, avoiding certain textures and foods, distress at labels and seams, hating being touched unexpectedly, overwhelmed in busy places, complaining about smells no one else notices.
Hypo-responsive (under-registering). Input arrives too quiet, so the child seeks more. Constant movement, crashing and jumping, chewing clothing, licking or mouthing objects, loving loud music, high pain threshold, appearing not to hear.
Most autistic children are both, across different senses — and the same child can flip between them depending on tiredness, stress, illness and how full their day has been.
Mapping your child’s profile
Before changing anything, spend two weeks observing. Go sense by sense.
For each of the eight senses, note:
- What does my child seek out?
- What do they avoid or react badly to?
- What do they seem not to notice?
- What is the time of day that reactions are worst?
Common examples worth watching for:
Sound. Hand dryers, vacuum cleaners, fire alarms, canteens, background chatter, several people talking at once, the specific pitch of a younger sibling.
Touch. Clothing labels, seams in socks, waistbands, hair washing and cutting, nail cutting, sticky hands, unexpected light touch (often worse than firm touch).
Sight. Fluorescent lights and their flicker, busy patterned walls, bright sunlight, visually cluttered rooms, screens at high brightness.
Smell and taste. Perfume, cleaning products, cooking smells, mixed foods, food touching on the plate, specific textures.
Movement and body. Swings, roundabouts, escalators, being lifted, standing on one leg, sitting still.
Practical changes that work
At home
- Create one low-sensory room or corner. Dimmable or lamp lighting instead of overhead, few visual distractions, soft furnishings to absorb sound, a den or tent for enclosure.
- Solve clothing properly. Cut out labels, buy seamless socks, allow the same outfit repeatedly, wash new clothes several times before wearing. This is not indulgence — it removes a genuine, daily, avoidable stressor.
- Warn before noise. Announce the blender, the hoover, the hand dryer. Predictable noise is far easier to tolerate than sudden noise.
- Offer proprioceptive input regularly. Heavy work — carrying shopping, pushing a laundry basket, wall pushes, animal walks, jumping — is the most reliably regulating input for most children, and it is free.
- Build sensory breaks into the day, before overwhelm rather than after.
At school
Reasonable and usually easy to arrange: ear defenders or noise-reducing earplugs; sitting away from doors, corridors and windows; leaving lessons two minutes early to avoid corridor crush; a pass for a quiet space; eating lunch somewhere quieter; a movement break each hour; alternative seating; permission to fidget or stand.

Out and about
Go at quiet times. Use headphones without apology. Have an exit plan and tell your child what it is. Bring familiar food. Prepare them with photos of where you are going. Keep trips short at first and lengthen them gradually.
The regulation toolkit
Different children need different input. Build a personal toolkit through observation, not prescription:
Calming for most children: deep pressure (weighted blanket, firm hugs, being squashed under cushions), slow rhythmic rocking, dim light, quiet enclosed spaces, chewing, sucking through a straw, warm baths.
Alerting for most children: jumping, running, cold water, sour or crunchy foods, bright light, upbeat music, spinning.
Both: movement, which regulates in different directions depending on the child and the day.
A sensory diet — a planned schedule of these activities through the day — works far better than reacting once a child is already overwhelmed. An occupational therapist can design one properly; you can build a rough version yourself in a week of observation.
Sensory needs and behaviour
Once you see it, a lot resolves:
- Refusing to hold hands → tactile sensitivity, not defiance
- “Not listening” → auditory processing delay or filtering difficulty
- Constant fidgeting → proprioceptive seeking, which genuinely aids concentration
- Refusing most foods → texture and smell, not fussiness (food selectivity)
- Meltdown at a party → cumulative sensory overload (meltdown vs tantrum)
- Removing clothes → tactile discomfort
- Chewing sleeves → oral seeking; offer a chew tool rather than stopping it
The general rule: if a behaviour meets a sensory need, replace it rather than remove it. Stopping chewing without offering an alternative removes a regulation strategy and leaves the need unmet. The same applies to stimming, which is the most important self-regulation tool most autistic children have.

Frequently asked questions
What are the eight senses?
Beyond sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell there are three internal senses: proprioception (body position), vestibular (balance and movement) and interoception (internal signals such as hunger, thirst and needing the toilet). All three are commonly affected in autism.
Can a child be both sensory seeking and sensory avoiding?
Yes, and most are. A child may crave deep pressure and movement while being highly sensitive to sound, and their responses can change with tiredness, stress and illness.
Do sensory issues get better with age?
Sensitivities often persist, but coping does improve. Children learn to recognise their own needs, ask for accommodations and choose environments — which is why teaching self-advocacy matters more than trying to build tolerance.
